Moos: Furloughs, Salary Reductions to Help Save $3 Million

By News Aug 21, 2020 | 3:09 PM

Budget restrictions were expected with the loss of fall sports for Nebraska, particularly football, and today Nebraska Athletics announced more cost saving measures.

Athletic Director Bill moos says 51 staff members within athletics will be furloughed through the end of the year, beginning September 1. Those not furloughed will take a 10-percent salary reduction for that same time period.

“The postponement of the fall sports season, and specifically the football season, has put us in the position of making some very difficult decisions that impact every member of our staff,” said Moos. “In my three decades as an athletic director, I have always said that people are our most valuable resource and there is no question that is true here at Nebraska. These are outstanding staff members and great people, and that is what makes this a particularly tough day.”

The moves are in addition to the June measures that included a 10 percent reduction in overall expenses for Fiscal Year 2021, no merit increases for staff for FY 21 and the elimination of 17 positions in the Nebraska Athletic Department. Moos closes by saying that staffing decisions are expected to save the department approximately $3 million.
