Nebraska Leaders: Fully Committed Member of the Big Ten Conference

By News Aug 13, 2020 | 8:48 AM

After a day of silence, Nebraska leadership has reaffirmed the university’s commitment to the Big Ten Conference.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green and Nebraska University System President Ted Carter released a joint statement Thursday morning:

“The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is a fully committed member of the Big Ten Conference. It is an unparalleled athletic and academic alliance.

“We have the greatest fans in college athletics. This has been a difficult and disappointing week for the Husker family. We all look forward to the day when we can cheer on our student-athletes, on the field and in the arena.”

Several national media outlets have reported that Nebraska was threatening to leave the Big Ten if fall sports were not played. The speculation stemmed from head football coach Scott Frost saying Monday that Nebraska would explore options for playing then a joint statement Tuesday expressing disappointment in Big Ten’s decision to postpone fall sports.

“I support (Green and Carter) 100-percent,” said Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts Thursday. “The Big Ten has been great for the University of Nebraska. I know that fans would like to see football games, so would I. But I certainly agree with (the) decision to stay within the Big Ten and keep that commitment.”

The statement from Green and Carter does not mention if Nebraska is or is not continuing to explore options for the fall 2020 season.
