Report: Nebraska Can't Play Fall Football and Remain Big Ten Member

By News Aug 12, 2020 | 5:55 AM

Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren twice avoided the question when asked during the postponement announcement on Big Ten Network if a member school could play a football season on their own this fall.

“I’m sure there will be a lot of other issues that will arise or be raised that we’ll address at the appropriate time,” said Warren on BTN Live. “Today’s not the appropriate day to do that.”

“Today” — Tuesday — apparently was the appropriate time to do that. On live television just was not the arena that Warren wanted to address it in.

Hours later, Warren told Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports that Nebraska can’t go it alone this fall.

“No,” Warren told Thamel in a phone call. “Not and be a member of the Big Ten Conference.”

Nebraska leadership issued a joint statement following the postponement announcement saying they are “disappointed in the decision by the Big Ten Conference” and that they “hope it may be possible for our student athletes to have the opportunity to compete.” Football coach Scott Frost repeatedly said at his Monday press conference his team hoped to play a Big Ten schedule, but should the conference call off the fall then NU was “prepared to look for other options.”
